Since its inception, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) has become a leading United Nations platform for intercultural dialogue, understanding and cooperation. It has connected governments, lawmakers, local authorities, civil society organizations, the media, and individuals devoted to promoting understanding across diverse communities.

UNAOC features programming in the areas of Education, Youth, Migration and Media.

UNAOC was established in 2005, as the political initiative of Mr. Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General and co-sponsored by the Governments of Spain and Turkey.

On 7 January 2019, H.E. Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos assumed the position of High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, succeeding H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, who succeeded H.E. Mr. Jorge Sampaio.

The UNAOC High Representative and Secretariat are based and operating from New York. The Alliance maintains a global network of partners including states, international and regional organizations, civil society groups, foundations, and the private sector to improve cross-cultural relations between diverse nations and communities.

H.E. Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos  commented “UNAOC are delighted to support the What About Us musical project, which is promoting peace over war and love over hate while giving our younger generations a voice to express themselves and address key issues such as climate change, the environment and the need to protect vulnerable refugees suffering from war and persecution”.

About the UN

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945.  It is currently made up of 193 Member States.  The mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

In their own words

“In 1945, nations were in ruins, World War II was over, and the world wanted peace.

51 countries gathered in San Francisco in that year to sign a document

That document was a charter, creating a new organization, The United Nations

70 years later the United Nations is maintaining International peace and security

It is promoting development and giving humanitarian assistance to those in need.

It is upholding International law, promoting human rights and protecting Democracy

And now, its Member States are working together to fight climate change

The UN is helping build the better world it’s Founders envisioned 75 years ago.”
